The City of Surrey is throwing a “Party for the Planet” event at Central City Plaza on April 27-28, 2012! This free, family-friendly event will be the largest Earth Day celebration held in British Columbia.

“This is a fun way to celebrate Surrey’s many sustainability initiatives and environmental partnerships,” said Mayor Dianne Watts. “We are always working to make our city greener and want to share what the City and local organizations are doing to create a healthier community for all residents.”

The Bike Powered Main Stage will showcase a spectacular line up with performances from Spirit of the West, Hannah Georgas and Aidan Knight. Other artists taking stage include; George Leach, Bobs & Lolo, Greg Sczebel, Tambura Rasa Shane Philip and Cirque Surrey.

This event will allow City Departments that incorporate sustainable management practices of City Utilities, such as Transportation, Engineering and District Energy to highlight their initiatives in a fun and interactive environment.  Party for the Planet has also partnered with many environmental stewardship groups to provide a platform for grass-roots community education.

“Enviro-Activity Zones” on site will include: Agriculture Alley, Community Corridor, Energy Avenue, Nature Nook, Transportation Trail and First Nations Village. This will profile organizations such as Nature Matters, Surrey Nature Centre, Orphaned Wildlife Rescue (OWL), - Vancouver Planetarium, Telus World of Science, BC Chicken Growers, and BC Hydro Power Smart. Exciting family fun features will also be onsite such as Salmon Life Cycle Obstacle Course, Where’s Wildlife Interpretive Forest, Birds of Prey demonstration, Scavenger Hunt Straw Maze, Star Lab, Origami Plant Pots and Seed Planting, and Poultry in Motion Educational Mini Barn.
