It's time for Deep Root Fertilization and Aeration to give your
trees and shrubs the healthy nutrients they need to get them through
the hot summer months and also to ensure health and vigour and help
to resist pest attacks! Happy trees mean less costly maintenance
in the future! Check under our services for more information on
this.
A big concern for this time of year is Pest Management. Now is the
time to have one of our technicians visit your property before the
damage is done. Bruce Spanworm is a #1 attacker.
A major problem on the Lower Mainland-- Larvae attack apple,
birch, blueberry, cherries (fruiting and flowering ones), maple,
plum, poplar and many other trees and shrubs. Beginnning in early
April to late May, worms feed on flowers, leaves and buds. Defoliation
occurs when infestations are severe. Young worms are carried on
the wind and can drift considerable distances on silken threads,
so protected trees can become infested from neglected trees in the
neighbourhood. The male moths are pale tan-gray with a wing span
of about 3.2 cm. The females are wingless. The full-grown larvae
or worms are about 2 cm long. They are bright green with three narrow,
whitish stripes on each side of the body. Spray treatment should
begin in April.
Also, if you've been considering planting... now is the optimum
time! It will minimize plant stress from the initial shock of transplantation
and give the plant more time to adjust to its new environment before
the hotter temperatures appear.
