  • Learn to recognize structural defects like co-dominant stems, cracks, included bark, and heavy end-weight, and determine when supplemental support is appropriate

  • Supervised practice installing static systems (anchor points, drilling, terminal hardware, hand-splicing, tensioning) and dynamic systems (shock-absorption components, anchor loops, tensioning)

  • Covers bracing systems and how they're used alongside cabling

  • Inspection, maintenance, and documentation practices aligned with ANSI A300 intervals

Foundations & Assessment:

  • Site hazards, safe work practices, required PPE, and tool-handling basics

  • Tree biomechanics: load paths, failure points, and common structural defects

  • When structural supports are considered, and their purpose

  • Static vs. dynamic systems: functions, differences, strengths, and limitations

  • Inspection and assessment: identifying defects, evaluating load distribution, species considerations, and choosing cabling, bracing, or alternative mitigation

  • Documentation and reporting for municipal workflows

  • Hardware overview: bolts, lag hooks, thimbles, wire rope, dead-ends, bracing rods, and dynamic components (e.g. COBRA)

  • Wire rope specs, working load limits, component sizing, and tool use

  • Safety considerations when working aloft with hardware

Hands-On Installation & Maintenance:

  • Static system installation: anchor points, drilling, terminal hardware, hand-splicing cable, tensioning, and supervised practice

  • Dynamic system installation: system selection, shock-absorption function, anchor loops, tensioning methods, and supervised practice

  • Bracing systems: purpose, when used alongside cabling, drilling and rod installation, limitations, and safety considerations

  • Inspection and maintenance: ANSI A300 intervals, signs of wear or failure, documentation, escalation, and replacement timelines
